In Pistoia, the Befana (Literally) Descends from the Sky!

If you’re looking for a truly magical way to cap off the holiday season, the city of Pistoia has an event you absolutely can’t miss. Every year on January 6th, the Epiphany is celebrated in a spectacular fashion in Piazza del Duomo with the traditional Descent of the Befana from the Bell Tower.

This event, which has been taking place for over 30 years, is an irresistible attraction for both young and old. The atmosphere builds throughout the afternoon with music and entertainment, all in anticipation of the grand finale: the arrival of Italy’s most beloved “old lady.”

The show, organized by the Firefighters, is nothing short of breathtaking. In a display that combines tradition with daring, the Befana rappels down from a height of about 30 meters from the bell tower of the Cathedral of San Zeno, appearing to “fly” over the heads of the enthusiastic crowd filling the square.

It’s a moment of pure magic that culminates with the distribution of sweets and “coal” to the children, creating a festive and joyful atmosphere that enchants everyone present. The event is the perfect conclusion to the “Pistoia Christmas City” program, leaving both tourists and locals with an unforgettable memory.
